SlateMate Terms of Use
Last updated: October 19, 2026
These terms are an agreement between you and the SlateMate team ("we", "us") about your use of the SlateMate app ("SlateMate"). By creating an account or using SlateMate, you agree to them and to our Privacy Policy. If you don't agree, please don't use SlateMate.
1. Who can use SlateMate
- You must be 13 or older to use SlateMate.
- Slate and the scene partner's voices are for people 18 and over. This covers Slate's voice chat, the voiced lines of your scene partner, "Line!" and the voice samples. They're made by our voice provider, ElevenLabs, whose rules don't allow them for under-18s without its written approval.
- Before you first use Slate or the scene partner (including the free demo scene), the app asks you to confirm "I'm 18 or older". Please answer honestly. If you're under 18, those features stay locked, and everything else keeps working. You can change your answer in Account if you made a mistake.
- We may lock features or close an account if we believe the age rules aren't being followed, and we'll delete an account we learn belongs to a child under 13.
2. Your account
- You sign up with an email address and a password, and confirm your email with a 6-digit code we send you. Keep your password and your email account private; you're responsible for what happens in your account.
- Tell us at hello@slatemate.ai if you think someone else has used it.
- You can delete your account at any time in the app: Account → Delete my account. This permanently deletes your journal, tapes, files, scenes, insights and practice history. The Privacy Policy has the details.
3. Your content stays yours
- Everything you add to SlateMate is your content, and you own it: auditions, reflections, notes, self-tapes, photos and PDFs of sides, check-ins, the intentions you write, what you say to Slate, and what you ask with "Hey Slate".
- You give us permission to store it, process it and show it back to you, only as needed to run SlateMate for you. That includes sending some of it to the service providers that power the features you turn on, such as the AI features (see section 6 and the Privacy Policy).
- We don't use your content for advertising, and we don't sell it.
4. Sides, scripts and other people's material
- Audition sides and scripts usually belong to someone else. Only upload material you're allowed to use for your own audition preparation.
- Don't upload material under a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) or anything you've been told to keep confidential. Some features send the text to AI companies to read it and voice it.
- SlateMate is for private, personal practice. Don't use it to share, publish or distribute other people's material.
5. Use SlateMate fairly
Please don't:
- break the law, or anyone's rights, using SlateMate
- try to get into other people's accounts or data, or interfere with how the app or its servers work, including getting around its usage limits
- use the AI features to create content that's hateful, harassing, sexual involving minors, violent or otherwise harmful, or to impersonate a real person
- make automated or bulk requests, or use SlateMate to build a competing product
- upload anything harmful, such as malware
- copy, resell or reverse-engineer the app, except where the law allows it
We may limit, suspend or close accounts that break these terms.
6. AI features
- AI is used for: insights, prep plans, reading your sides, line suggestions, your scene partner's voices, "Hey Slate" requests during a rehearsal that the phone can't handle by itself, and Slate's voice chat. The scene partner's voices and Slate are for people 18 and over (section 1). The app asks before it sends anything to an AI company, and you can turn AI features off in Account. The Privacy Policy lists exactly what's sent and to whom.
- AI can be wrong. It can misread a line, suggest an intention that doesn't fit, or say something unhelpful. Check what it gives you and trust your own judgment about your work. You can fix every line on the review screen.
- AI voices are not real people. Slate and the scene partner's voices are made by AI. They don't belong to, or speak for, any real actor.
- You can use the voiced lines in your own self-tapes. If you record yourself while the scene partner reads (in SlateMate or on another camera), you may keep its reading in your self-tapes and audition videos, and send them to casting, your agent or manager, or your teacher or coach. The same goes for "Line!" and for Slate, if they're heard while you record.
- What you can't do with the voices: don't download, copy or extract the voices or the voiced lines on their own (outside your tapes); don't sell, license or share them as audio; don't use them to train or build other AI voices; and don't use them to impersonate anyone, or present the AI reader as a real person.
- Usage limits. Slate and voiced scenes have monthly limits, shown in the app. We may change the limits, and if a provider or our spending limit is reached, Slate and voicing may pause for a while. Your journal keeps working.
7. Slate, breathing and wellbeing
- SlateMate's breathing exercises, affirmations, prep plans and Slate are general wellbeing and preparation tools. They are not medical, psychological or therapeutic advice, and they don't diagnose or treat anything.
- Slate is for people 18 and over (section 1).
- Slate is an AI coach, not a therapist. If you're struggling or thinking about harming yourself, please contact a professional. In the US, call or text 988 (the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline). Elsewhere, contact your local emergency number.
- Breathe gently. Stop any exercise if you feel dizzy, faint or unwell. If you have a heart, lung or other health condition, or you're pregnant, check with a doctor first.
8. No promises about auditions
SlateMate helps you prepare, rehearse, reflect and learn from every audition. It doesn't promise callbacks, bookings or any particular result.
9. Free early access
- SlateMate is free during early access.
- We may offer paid features later. If we do, we'll tell you the price and what's included before you pay anything, and purchases will go through Apple.
- We won't take away your journal or the content you've added because paid features arrive.
10. Beta testing (TestFlight)
If you test a beta version through Apple's TestFlight:
- it may be unfinished and may lose or mishandle data, so keep your own copies of anything important, such as your self-tapes
- please send feedback through TestFlight or to hello@slatemate.ai
- you're not paid or rewarded for testing (Apple's rule)
- the beta stops working when Apple's testing period ends
11. The service
- We work to keep SlateMate running and your data safe, but SlateMate is provided "as is" and "as available". It may sometimes be unavailable, change, or have bugs.
- We may add, change or remove features.
- Keep your own copies of anything important to you, such as your self-tapes.
12. Liability
To the fullest extent the law allows:
- we are not liable for indirect, incidental or consequential losses, or for loss of data, arising from your use of SlateMate
- if we are found liable to you, our total liability is limited to the greater of what you paid us for SlateMate in the 12 months before the claim, or US $50
Some places don't allow these limits, so they may not apply to you. Nothing here limits rights you have by law.
13. Ending your use
- You can stop using SlateMate and delete your account at any time.
- We may stop offering SlateMate. If we do, we'll give reasonable notice in the app so you can save what you need.
14. Apple
- If you downloaded SlateMate from Apple's App Store, Apple's standard terms for apps (the Licensed Application End User License Agreement) also apply.
- These terms are between you and us, not Apple. Apple isn't responsible for SlateMate or for supporting it.
15. Changes to these terms
- We may update these terms. If a change matters, we'll tell you in the app before it takes effect.
- If you keep using SlateMate after that, you accept the new terms.
16. Law
These terms are governed by the laws of the US state where SlateMate is based (to be named before launch), except where the law where you live says otherwise.
